Territory info

Lake Attersee, one of Austria’s most beautiful lakes, captivates with its turquoise blue color:
Lake Attersee is Austria’s largest inland lake with a length of 21 kilometers, a width of 3 kilometers and a size of approx. 47 km2. The deepest point was measured at 170 meters. The Schafberg rises to the southwest and the Höllengebirge to the southeast. Lake Attersee, with its rose wind, is known far beyond the borders as the sailing area of choice. There are also pleasant bathing temperatures in summer.

Winch

Rose wind

Why Rosenwind? It is said that in earlier times Schloss Kammer was surrounded by rose gardens. The north-easterly wind carried the scent of roses across the Attersee. The rose wind also includes sunshine and glorious blue skies. The wind sets in around midday, usually remains constant until the evening and can reach up to 4 Beaufort.

The west wind, on the other hand, is known for its strong and unpredictable gusts.

History

The name probably has pre-Celtic roots (ata or ada – meaning “water”). The Attersee region was already inhabited in the Neolithic Age. In August 1870, the remains of pile dwellings were discovered in the north of the lake. Since 2011, the finds in Abtsdorf and Litzlberg have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps” alongside the finds in Mondseeland.

There are also relics of Roman villas on Lake Attersee.

During the Belle Époque, the Attersee region was a summer resort for numerous artists such as Gustav Klimt and Gustav Mahler. The composer and conductor Mahler had his own composer’s cottage in Steinbach am Attersee, which can still be visited today.

The railroad line from Vöcklabruck to Kammer was built in 1881. Shipping can be traced back to the year 1869.
